Blackberry Playbook

For

  •     1080p HD video playback
  •     Fast dual-core processor
  •     HDMI mirroring
  •     Secure email
  •     Bright, responsive screen

Against

  •     Hardly any worthwhile apps
  •     Confusing bridge to phone
  •     No email client
  •     Smaller screen

This tablet brings a 3MP front-facing camera, a 5MP rear-facing one, a bright and crisp 1200x600 resolution screen, a light 425g body and all the typical gyro, accelerometer and GPS sensors and you have the makings for a powerful 7-inch tablet with a powerful multi-tasking, where you can run a video in one window and play a game in another with both apps running concurrently, is a first of its kind for a mainstream tab.

File storage capabilities, support for an HDMI connection for playing 1080p video and a slick interface make the PlayBook an interesting anomaly.

The BlackBerry PlayBook is designed to be mobile and business-friendly. That means, at 130x194mm, the device is small enough to hold with one hand, slip in a laptop bag side pouch, and even carry around all day to meetings. The smaller screen does make movies look less than thrilling, and there's not much space for more complex tablet apps.

The tablet is easy to grip and looks bright and crisp. The dual-core 1GHz processor, made by Texas Instruments, and 1GB of RAM add some muscle to the PlayBook, running most of the apps we tested smoothly and quickly.

The BlackBerry PlayBook doesn't support external storage, but does have a micro USB port you can use to connect the tablet to your computer. Once you do, you can configure the PlayBook so that it shares files over Wi-Fi. This means copying files to and from the tablet without having to connect is possible.

Google's new Nexus 7

The much awaited Google's nexus tablet is out at a price of $199 only. The new tablet, which weighs in at just 340g, packs a 7 inch screen with 1280x800 screen and comes complete with a quad core Nvidia Tegra 3 CPU, plus a 12 core GPU too.

There's integrated Wi-Fi but no 3G or 4G, a front-facing camera.
There's also no microSD card slot, so you're limited massively if you're one of those that loves HD movies.

The Nexus 7 tablet includes a microphone, Bluetooth, NFC for Android Beam, an accelerometer, magnetometer, GPS and gyroscope, and the built-in Wi-Fi supports 802.11b

As you'd expect, Google's tablet runs Google's latest operating system: Android 4.1, aka Jelly Bean. It also benefits from the very polished "Project Butter" user interface technology, which is much smoother than previous Androids or Amazon's forked version of the OS, and it's the first Android tablet to ship with Chrome as its default browser.

The battery life(4,325mAh) is a big talking point too, with a very decent nine hours of video playback or up to 300 hours of standby if you promise to be really lean with your tablet.

Foldable Tablet PC

A foldable Tablet PC concept was a big technology expectation for the future, one company from Fold & Go Mobile Tablet which envisaged by AN Design Lab has designed a flexible tablet device that can literally be folded and used. It seems that the flexible display screen will became the next trends in technology.

The display element of the tablet can utilize the component of plastic substrates that would give it the e-paper vibe.

According to the designers, they have also alluded to the utilization of emerging flexible display technologies. In relation to this, there are already many electronic giants going behind this Holy Grail of next generation display .

You can pick one up for around £300 but you might want to wait for the thinner AT200 to turn up instead.

Toshiba AT200 - Excite

Toshiba AT200 - Excite

After a bit of to and fro since Toshiba first mooted a Honeycomb tablet at CES 2011, the company has finally come out with something solid 8 months later at IFA. This is the Toshiba AT200 or Excite to its friends. It's a 10.1-inch Honeycomb (3.2) tablet that will come with a 1280x800 resolution screen, 1.2GHz TI OMAP 4430 processor, with 1GB of RAM and storage up to 64GB.

You get a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera, as well as a forward-facing one for video calling and, at just 7.7mm thick, it's one of the thinnest tablets on the block to date - over 1mm thinner than the iPad 2, as it goes. It also weighs just 558 grams with dimensions of 256 x 176 x 7.7mm. Toshiba is promising 8 hours of battery life from a single charge.

Sony Tablet S

 Sony Tablet S

Best Android tablet for: PlayStation gaming

As a veritable mega-giant in the consumer tech universe, Sony's landing on Planet Tablet was always going to be interesting. Blasting off alongside the fold-in-half Tablet P, the Tablet S has a unique wedge-shaped design and top-end specs.

It's a very decent and refined tablet, and has the unique feature of having access to original PlayStation games. The only issue is that it's not as tidy as the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and not as versatile as the Transformer. Apart from that, it's one of the best Android tablets out there.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

 Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

Best Android tablet for: the out-and-out tablet experience

While the Transformer and Slider offer something a little different at an unbeatable price, our number 5 -the Galaxy Tab 10.1 - offers a direct alternative to Apple's iPad 2. Sporting the Tegra 2 dual-core CPU, it's both marginally thinner and lighter than the iPad 2. This was some achievement, especially when you consider the fuss Apple made about how thin and light the iPad 2 was on launch.

But it has since been beaten on this front by its little 8.9-inch sibling and of course the Transformer Prime.

If you want an iPad-like tablet that's not an iPad, this is the one. The prices are the same as the iPad 2, so it's a straight shoot-out on features..

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9

Best Android tablet for: portability and power

In at number three is the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 - and it's a funny little thing. It's essentially the same as its older brother, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, but with an 8.9-inch screen. It's slightly thinner and lighter, and consequently more convenient for anyone wanting to stuff it in a bag.

Apart from these physical attributes, the internal components are basically the same. So you get the same slick performance and overall tablet experience. We've put this above the 10.1 because of the increased convenience owed to its slightly smaller size, but that shouldn't put you off going for the 10.1
if you're after a bigger screen.

Asus Eee Pad Transformer

Asus Eee Pad Transformer
The first quad-core Tegra 3 tablet smashes its way to the top of our list. The original Asus Eee Pad Transformer is still one of the best Android tablets around, but the Prime is the best of them all. It's one step better than its predecessor in every respect, and is the first tablet to launch with Nvidia's quad-core Tegra 3 CPU which adds super-powers and increased power efficiency.

Playing 1080p videos is no longer a problem, with high-res clips playing on the Prime's albeit sub-1080p display smoothly and without issue. It's also the thinnest tablet we've yet seen, and comes with a gorgeous keyboard dock which adds an additional 8-hours of battery life to tablet unit's 9-hours.

It's the best Android tablet yet launched, and it'll be unleashed on the UK in January in one single 32GB flavour with keyboard dock and a £499 price tag

Windows N12

Window N12 is the latest tabelt of Window, it also configured a 7 inch capacitive multi-point touch screen with RK2918 chip, Android 4.0 operating system and ARM 512MB. Its main data is same with the Window N10 besides the sreen resolution ratio which is 16:9 on Window N12.

Rumor: A $149 Google Nexus Tablet

Bad news for Android partners

The latest report from Digitimes has Google partnering with ASUS to create a low-cost tablet to compete with the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet.

It'd also run the latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich.

Nook Tablet VS Kindle Fire

Battle of the cheap tablets

When it comes to the affordable tablets, there are really only two that matter: Amazon's Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble's Nook Tablet.

Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

The first quad-core Tegra 3 tablet smashes its way to the top of our list. The original Asus Eee Pad Transformer is still one of the best Android tablets around, but the Prime is the best of them all. It's one step better than its predecessor in every respect, and is the first tablet to launch with Nvidia's quad-core Tegra 3 CPU which adds super-powers and increased power efficiency.

Sony Tablet P

While the Tablet S sports a "folded magazine" design, the clamshell design of the Tablet P is likely to be more controversial. 3G comes as standard on this 380g, 5.5-inch screen device which offers up a still very sharp 1024x480 resolution on each side. As a clamshell design, you have two screens and, depending on what app you choose to use, they’ll either work together or separately.
